Fiery crash in Poway creates fears that flames could spark brush fire

SAN DIEGO - San Diego Gas & Electric officials said the utility was considering precautionary power shutoffs for more than 40,000 customers. The shutoffs would be implemented to de-energize power lines in danger of being damaged or downed by strong winds, potentially sparking wildfires.

But homes and business aren’t the only components of the electrical grid affected by power shutoffs: traffic lights are also impacted.

The traffic lights were turned off at a busy Poway intersection Wednesday evening at the sight of a vehicle collision, which resulted in a car catching on fire and even exploding, creating fears that those flames could spark a brush fire.
